Cutting oils are believed to act as a lubricant in the interface between chips and the tool reducing friction and aiding in chip flow. The primary reason for the use of cutting oils is for lubrication to reduce process friction. Cutting oils are also employed to increase the rate of heat flow from the machining process, i.e. for cooling to remove any process generated heat. This lubrication and cooling improves the surface finish of the machined work.
